Corgi cops to the rescue!

Police forces in Moscow, Russia begin training corgi puppies for their canine unit
I'm on my way! Don't start the search without me! (@Dreamstime)

Dogs are more than just man's best friend. They've also helped police forces do their jobs for a very long time. Strong fast breeds like German shepherds are used to chase and restrain fleeing suspects at a crime scene.

Meanwhile, keen expert sniffers like beagles and bloodhounds track the scent of missing people and objects or find illegal items.

And now, meet the latest addition to this elite crops of crime-fighting mutts: the... Welsh corgi?

Okay, maybe not THIS corgi. But it's true that police forces in Moscow, the capital of Russia, are experimenting with training corgi puppies to become part of their canine unit. As full-grown dogs, these corgis would obviously not become chase and attack dogs like a German shepherd. Instead, the Moscow police are seeing them as excellent candidates for detection (finding by sniffing) and tracking dogs. They would be used to find things like hidden bombs and illegal items.

Once you get past the corgi's absolutely adorable exterior, it is true that these dogs have an excellent sense of smell. Plus, their small, low-to-the-ground body  allows them to comfortably search the kinds of tight spaces where bad guys like to hide stuff. Also, as someone who has been bitten by an angry corgi before, the writer wants you to not underestimate just how ferocious these little dogs can be.

So best of luck to you, future Russian corgi cops! If it doesn't work out, you can always go back to the job you were breed for: herding large groups of cattle and sheep by nipping at their heels when they fell out of line. At least that explains why they're so low to the ground. Nip! Nip!
