Privacy policy

We attach great importance to the handling, confidentiality, and security of your personal information.

Bayard Canada and its affiliated companies, namely Novalis Publishing, Bayard Canada Livres, and Owlkids Books – hereinafter referred to as Bayard Group– as well as Publications BLD and Publications Senior, whose head office is located at 4475 Frontenac Street, in Montreal, wish to inform you in a clear, simple and complete manner, how we use the information we collect, disclose, and process when you write to us by mail or email, or when you visit our editorial sites, our transactional sites, our social media platforms, or your account, hereinafter referred to as “our sites.”

This policy does not apply to websites or applications operated by third parties. Bayard Group, Publications BLD, and Publications Senior are not responsible for their privacy policies, procedures, or practices. Since it is your decision to access another website, it is your responsibility to read the policies applicable to those sites before proceeding or providing any personal information.

PERSONAL INFORMATION

1. What is “personal information” and how is it collected?

Personal information is information about an identifiable individual – that is, information that can be used to identify that individual. We collect this information in order to respond to you, provide you with our services and products, or improve them.

Depending on the information you provide or share with us, personal information may include your last name, first name, postal address, email address, telephone number, and/or financial data provided when you register for our various personalization services, e-mails, surveys, contests, subscriptions, subscription renewals, and product purchases. When your personal data is collected, you will be informed whether the information requested is mandatory in order to benefit from a service, or optional.

We want to send you only the information you want, whether it’s newsletters, special offers, new products, contests, surveys, or celebrations. You will always have the option of unsubscribing from our services if you wish.

2. Is personal information shared with third parties?

Bayard Group, Publications BLD, and Publications Senior may communicate your name and postal address to carefully selected partners. You can contact us at any time to be excluded from these mailings.

Bayard Group, Publications BLD, and Publications Senior will not pass on your email address to its commercial partners unless you have expressly consented to this.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, your personal information may be communicated to third-party companies engaged to store or process such information on behalf of and for our company under contractual agreements guaranteeing the confidentiality and security of such personal information.

Please note that our companies may use the services of suppliers located outside of Canada. It is therefore possible, in rare cases, that the laws in force in these foreign countries may allow personal information to be communicated to judicial, quasi-judicial, or governmental authorities.

In the event of a transfer of ownership, sale, merger, liquidation, reorganization or acquisition of an affiliate of Bayard Group, Publications BLD, or Publications Senior in whole or in part, your personal information may be transferred as part of the transaction.

3. How and for how long is personal information kept?

The personal information we collect is stored on servers that are inaccessible to the public and is protected by appropriate security measures. We keep your personal data only for as long as is necessary to fulfill the purpose for which it was collected, to meet your needs, or to comply with our legal obligations.

However, the voluntary disclosure of personal information during chat sessions by messenger, on a blog, or on any interactive page where you publicly present your comments is not covered by this policy. Bayard Group, Publications BLD, and Publications Senior accept no liability in this regard. No information you disclose should identify you or any other person.

4. In the case of a child under 14 years of age

As a parent or guardian, you will be asked to consent to the collection of your child’s data.

To participate in a contest or survey, a parent or guardian must authorize the sharing of the minor’s personal information (which may include photos, drawings, videos, testimonials, or other content created by the child). In the case of a contest, the information will only be used to manage the contest, select the winners, and announce the winners on our platforms. Personal information will be deleted at the end of the contest. In the case of a survey, data is aggregated and then anonymized. Response forms are then deleted.

We receive many letters and emails from our readers every day. We encourage children under 14 to ask permission before sending correspondence, and to check with an adult about the information they are sharing. Whenever possible, a member of our staff will reply to your child’s letter.

You can ask us to remove any mention of your child from our digital platforms.

All comments on our sites aimed at children under 14 are moderated by our teams. Comments will be posted after being read and approved by the moderator. Please respect other users at all times and use appropriate language. Comments from adults will not be published.

Internet use by minors should be monitored to some extent by their parents or guardians. On a blog or in a chat, young people should not give their name (use a pseudonym instead), address, telephone number, school name, or any other information, to avoid being identified.

5. Can you access your personal information?

You may request that your personal information be corrected if it is inaccurate or obsolete. You may also request that your personal information be supplemented, if necessary, by sending a written request to infopriv@bayardcanada.com.

6. What are the risks of sharing personal information?

Notwithstanding the foregoing, and despite our best efforts and the measures we have put in place, no data transmission on our sites or on the Internet in general is totally guaranteed or risk-free. We cannot guarantee the absolute security of your personal information if it is intercepted during transmission, or if you become a victim of piracy or fraud. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account and password. Bayard Group, Publications BLD, and Publications Senior will not be liable for any unauthorized use of your account or password.
