MOVIE REVIEW: A Wrinkle in Time

Disney’s brand new movie, A Wrinkle in Time, is an adaptation of the classic sci-fi book written by Madeleine L’Engle. At the centre of this story is 13 year-old Meg who feels like an outcast. Four years after her father disappeared, Meg is barely making it through school, dealing with bullies, and feels like no one understands her struggles. That's when Meg's brother Charles brings three eccentric (an understatement) beings into their lives. Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon), Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling), and Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey) take Meg, Charles, and their new friend Calvin on an epic adventure across the universe. The Mrs. guide the children as they search to find, and save Meg and Charles' father.

So how exactly does one travel across the universe? What? Don't you know about tessering? Alright, we hadn't, either. In this flick, tessering “wrinkles” space and time so the group can travel from planet to planet. From the magnificent beautiful meadows and mountains of Uriel, to the rocky landscape of Orion, to the mysterious planet Camazotz, you can say that no planet is left untouched in the search for dad. Cool right?

Real life science?

It gets cooler! A tesseract, which acts as a portal in the film to allow the group to take shortcuts around the universe, deals a little with real-life ideas in physics. Multiple dimensions and time travel used to just be considered science fiction, but scientists today believe there could be at least five or more dimensions in our universe. They also think that if we were able to travel through time and space, we would travel using a wormhole. You might also recognize the idea of a tesseract from Marvel Universe movies like The Avengers!

Powerful takeaway

A Wrinkle in Time is a truly encouraging story about the triumph of light over darkness and love over evil, of self-acceptance and one willful girl’s determination to save her father. It’s a visually beautiful, excitement-packed, science-filled, and well-acted movie with great messages about hope, love, and individuality.
