General KnOWLedge: How long is pi?

Just how many digits are there in this remarkable number?

March 14 is Pi Day.

And though many people do savour this day with a big slice of pie, we're not talking about the food.

We're talking about the number.

Pi is the number that represents the ratio of a circle's circumference (the distance around it) to its diameter (the distance across it). It is used in equations over and over again, everyday, by anyone who works with circles. Engineers, physicists, architects, landscapers, and so many more.

And yet, for such a commonly used number, it is notoriously difficult to harness and control. Just try writing it out. Pi is 3.14159265359 ...

... and so forth?

To infinity and beyond!

In the third episode of this season of OWLconnected's General KnOWLedge, we look at just how long pi is (endless! infinite!) and why that is so. How is it that we're able to use a number with such accuracy when we can't even express it perfectly numerically?

Watch the video below to discover all the delicious mysteries of pi!
