"What killed the dinosaurs?"
It's one of the first questions that I can ever remember asking.
It was an asteroid, was the reply.
What we didn't know was that it was an asteroid...sent by a sabre-toothed squirrel who accidentally collided with it in an alien spaceship that had been buried in ice.
Oh dear...
Save the species!
Okay, okay...we all know that this isn't actually what happened. Just as we know that the main characters in the Ice Age movies come from a far more recent prehistoric time than the Jurassic. But no matter, because Ice Age: Collision Course is about just that: a rodent-propelled asteroid that is hurtling toward Earth. Which means that Manny, Ellie, Peaches, Sid, and Diego have a lot of work to do if they don't want to end up like the dinosaurs. (Of course, I mean dinosaurs in real life, since there are still live dinosaurs in the Ice Age series and even in this movie...anyway, like I was saying...)
Like a lot of movie series that have been running for a long time, the fifth Ice Age is full of lots of characters. Sid's grouchy Granny and Diego's new wife, Shira, are back. So is Buck, the daring weasel hero of Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. Together, they all (except Granny, who mostly just complains) must hatch a creative and crazy plan to divert an asteroid. And they have to do all of this without any modern technology, of course. (Too bad Scrat didn't save them an extra UFO, right?)
Lots of new oddballs
Of course, it wouldn't be a new Ice Age movie if there weren't a bunch of new additions to the cast. Maybe the silliest is the Shangri-Llama, a flexible yoga-loving beast who holds a key to eternal youth...and to saving the planet. Even hapless Sid manages to find true love in Brooke, a beautiful sloth who is a follower of the Shangri-Llama. And this time around, the heroes aren't just fighting against the clock and a big hunk of space rock. They've also got to contend with a trio of Dromeaosaurs who have revenge against Buck on their mind.
Ice Age: Collision Course isn't as good a sequel as recent revivals like Kung-Fu Panda 3 and Finding Dory. But if you love silly energy, unlikely friends, and some cool outer space scenes, this movie is full of them. Want proof? Watch this! (Though this short came out last winter, it's basically the opening of Collision Course.)
