If you guessed b) well, yes, we'd really like to see that kind of awards show, too. But the correct answer is c). And these awards happened just this past Saturday, February 4th. Wondering who won what? We've got your answers!
It was a zoo in there!
2016 was an awesome year in animated movies. Trolls, The Secret Life of Pets, Sing, Storks, Angry Birds, plus the return of several beloved franchises like Ice Age: Collision Course, Kung Fu Panda 3, and, of course, Finding Dory, ALL hit the big screen. But at the Annie Awards, one film stood out: Zootopia.
The film about a city where predators and prey live in apparent harmony won six awards: for Directing, Voice Acting, Writing, Storyboarding, Character Design, and Best Picture. Nipping at its heels was Moana, the Polynesian adventure about a girl's quest to find the demi-god Maui, as well as Kubo and the Two Strings. Kubo won three awards thanks to its excellent stop motion animation. Seriously, that movie's animation was really something. If you missed it, here's the trailer.
Meanwhile, the Best Independent Feature (that means a film not made by a huge film company) was The Red Turtle. This movie about a shipwrecked man features no speaking, but has won a lot of praise for its story. And yes, it does have a red turtle.
What time is it?
Is it Adventure Time? That's right, because the Annie Awards also took time to recognize TV shows as well. That meant that the award for the Best Animated Television Broadcast for Children was given to that long-running home of zaniness, magic dogs, and, of course, bacon pancakes.
And because CGI (computer-generated imagery) is such a huge part of non-animated movies, the Annies also gave out awards for films like The Jungle Book and Doctor Strange for their otherworldly sequences that put real-life actors into unbelievable environments.
Of course, the biggest awards show of them all is coming on February 26: the Oscars. Zootopia, Moana, and Kubo are all nominated, along with The Red Turtle, and My Life As A Zucchini, a Swiss film in French about an orphan named Icare... but he prefers to be called Courgette! (That's "Zucchini".)
So you really can't tell us that you don't have anything new to watch! Enjoy, animated movie buffs!
